ABOUT US

Zoukak aims to cultivate an alternative and experimental form of expression through theatre among individuals and practitioners in Lebanon and beyond. Its vision includes the transmission of values and knowledge, the safeguarding of freedom of expression, and the definition of culture within diverse communities.

Founded in 2006 as a non-hierarchical theatre collective, Zoukak is committed to artistic practice as a vital social and political engagement. With over 20 theatre productions and performances toured globally, Zoukak has applied theatre across various contexts, including social engagement, therapy, and education.

Zoukak strives to foster a culture of dialogue and reflection around the performing arts. It operates a venue in Beirut as a contribution to establish theatre as a crucial ecosystem and platform for action for artists and various communities. Beyond collaborating with local artists and youth to facilitate their personal and artistic growth through training and mentorship programs, Zoukak has curated "Zoukak Sidewalks" since 2013. This international festival serves as a platform for supporting and showcasing the work of emerging local artists while also facilitating international touring opportunities.

Zoukak received several awards and honors, including, the Ibsen Scholarship award (2012), the Anna Lindh Foundation’s Euromed Dialogue Award for social resilience and creativity (2014), the Honorary Citizenship of the City of Palermo (2017), the Praemium Imperiale Grant for Young Artists from the Japan Arts Association (2017), the Chirac Foundation Award of Culture for Peace (2017) and the Ellen Stewart International Award (2018).
